
Thanks to a tip from a reader, I found out about these adorable little planters. Perfect to start up your kitchen window herb garden – with style.
They are called Egglings, from Elsewares. They look like eggs but are actually ceramic. All you have to do is crack it open, add water, and a garden springs up to greet you. Comes with terra cotta tray, as shown.
You can let these precious plants grow in the Egglings for a few months before needing to repot into something larger. Then, simply reuse the egg on something else.
Each Eggling comes with your choice of seed: basil, thyme, lobelia, phlox, petunia, mint

[...] And don’t throw away the eggshell. Crushing the shell and sprinkling the shards around your more-precious foliage will deter hungry slugs and snails. Alternatively, you can grind up the eggshell, stir it with some cornmeal and scatter the mix around some bird feeders. The calcium from the eggshell will help nesting feathered types lay better eggs.
