Foods That Don’t Stress You Out

Stress sucks. But before reaching for that bottle of Xanax to calm you down, take a look at what you’re eating – some good foods can actually help you chill out.

Whole Grains
Serotonin is a chemical in your brain that helps keep you balanced and happy. To get it flowing, you need carbs. While a piece of candy or a soda provides a quick burst of serotonin, complex carbs such as oatmeal and whole-grain bread are the way to go – you’ll get a slow yet consistent serotonin buzz.

Omega-3
Adrenaline comes in handy when you’re robbing a bank. But when you’re trying to settle down at night, it’s like sleeping with the enemy. Studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids can help control adrenaline. Foods that do the trick include salmon, sardines, anchovies, flax seed oil, walnuts, pecans, and eggs.

Fruits and Vegetables
Cortisol is known as the “stress hormone” for good reason. Vitamin C and magnesium can aid in the regulation of cortisol, especially when you consume it around the time of a stressful event. Get your Vitamin C on by eating citrus fruit, berries, broccoli, kale and most types of melons. To up your magnesium intake, add more spinach, nuts, cocoa, and black tea to your meals.
