In the spirit of adventure, I picked up a humongous turnip at the grocery store today (check out the picture – it’s as big as a pumpkin!). They were on sale in a pretty display at the front of the food section, looking all cheerful and pretty in a big violet-and-white pile. I couldn’t resist. Not until I got home did I realize I have no idea how to prepare this thing.
A quick search of the internet provided plenty of options. Here are some of the recipies I found:
This recipe for Raw Ravioli sounds like fun, as it uses thin slices of turnip in place of pasta, but I don’t have anything that would make such thin slices. Perhaps I need to visit the kitchen store?
This recipe for Turnip Casserole sounds good, but not particularly healthy. Plus, since I’m trying to cut out dairy this week, I think it will have to wait for another day.
This recipe for Spicy Turnips sounds promising, and I love Indian food.
This recipe for Baked Turnip and Sauerkraut Casserole sounds… interesting, but I can’t shake the feeling that I’d rather just have plain old sauerkraut.
Anyone have any other suggestions? If you cook with turnips, what do you do with them?

I ended up trying a version of this recipe for turnip “fries”:

It wasn’t bad once they were cooked enough (it took much longer than the recipe said it would), but I think I’m going to conclude that I’m just not a turnip person. At least I tried!
Soup! I’m very bad with the portions so you’ll have to experiment: potatoes, carrots, parnip and swede. To season: some cloves, bay leaves, salt and pepper. Cook the veg in water for 15/20 mn, then wizz!
