This is another brown rice powder, and it comes in individual packets, which is great for travel or making smoothies on-the-go.

Not long ago, it was difficult to find organic whey protein. Tera’s whey is fantastic. I love the individual envelopes which are great for travel. With flavors like acai, bourbon vanilla and wolfberry (aka goji berry) you’ll never tire of these.
Note: Whey proteins aren't vegan (they're dairy-based), so choose accordingly if that’s an issue.
Tera's is available at Whole Foods markets and online.
This is a great all-purpose whey protein that creates really creamy smoothies. Whey protein is good for your immune system. This powder contains only whey so there’s no aftertaste from sweeteners.
Available online at theorganicwhey.com or amazon.com.
Hemp isn't necessarily what you think: It's rich in omega-3’s and also a group of fats called GLA’s which are important for hormonal balance and healthy skin.
Available online.
Nutiva is a great company known for their hemp products and delicious coconut oil. Their HempShake is great particularly in the chocolate flavor. It’s great mixed with mint extract for a “thin mint” smoothie experience.
Available at Whole Foods markets and online.
SoCal makes a hemp powder with added herbs and spices — ginger, slippery elm and maca — that help you de-bloat to start your day.
Available at socalcleanse.com.
Vega-Vega is a fantastic vegan company. They make bars and shakes; my favorite is the Vega Sport fantastic after a workout.
Available at sequelnaturals.com.
Sun Warrior's protein powders are raw, vegan, and made from brown rice. You wouldn’t think of brown rice as a protein source, but the protein is isolated and makes great, natural protein powders. This is very "clean" and pretty much ground hemp and vegetables, so it's minimally processed.
Available at sunwarrior.com.
This is a protein and supplement in one. It contains protein from brown rice and quinoa, along with powdered greens and vegetables, flax, and spirulina.

My clients who use this powder swear by saying “it keeps me so satisfied.” I don’t doubt it there’s a little bit of everything in here. From vegetables to small amounts of certain vitamins this powder packs a punch.

can we use vegan proteins to make these smoothies? i am asking this question as i read a post, which explained that whey protein supplements are best for making healthy smoothies.
What’s the scoop on the Pure Protein brand… I can’t find any information about whether or not it contains the bad stuff that is typically found in “meathead” protein. It’s cheap, it tastes good, and I use it almost everyday. Can you please advise as to how healthy this stuff actually is? The main reason for using this brand is the cost, but if over the long run it’s bad, then I’ll gladly switch to one of the aforementioned, which will undoubtedly cost way more… Thanks in advance for any advice on this. Cheers!
It’s great to get protein from a variety of sources, but this demonization of soy protein is ludicrous. Soy is the single best and most complete vegan protein one can consume. There is no solid evidence that I’m aware of that demonstrates that phytoestrogens in moderate amounts are bad for our health. On the contrary, the phytoestrogens in soy may help to alleviate the symptoms of menopause.
As a vegetarian, I get probably half my protein from soy, including about a tablespoon of isolated soy protein in fruit juice each day. My mother and both of my sisters had a very hard time with menopause, while I breezed through it with virtually no symptoms other than irregular periods. At the time I didn’t know why that was, but later I read about soy phytoestrogens as a possible way to alleviate menopausal symptoms, so that is the most likely reason why it was so much easier for me than for my sisters.
I have a deep suspicion that most of the recent health scares and “alarms” and “cautions” about soy protein and soy foods are being generated by the meat industry, and by others who are opposed to the recent increase in the number of vegans and vegetarians. Because there is no other food that facilitates the healthy transition to a vegan or vegetarian diet like soy does. To find out whether the large consumption of soy is healthy or unhealthy, we need only look to various Asian countries, where soy has been a huge part of the diet for centuries. And generally we find that they are healthier and fitter and live longer than most westerners do. Soy is healthy. The dangerous thing for your health — and the health of animals and the environment — is the consumption of meat.
So, since this on our site and all, I decided to finally try a couple of protein powders to add to my smoothies. (Current favorite: Frozen bananas + unsweetened coconut or almond milk + cocoa powder + maca powder.)
So far, I tried Tera’s. Texture was great and the vanilla flavor was nice, but I have to say, I’m not crazy about the added stevia powder. I know it’s natural, and I even like to use it sometimes, but it still tastes like artificial sweetener to me, and I’d rather just get some sweet flavor from the fruit in my smoothies.
Next up: Vega. I bought individual packets to try a few flavors.
Does anyone else have favorites? Smoothie tips?
Whey is whey is whey, its all the same regardless of what the package promises
I like Tera’s Whey as well. Have you tried Full Circle’s Whey powder? It’s good–nice taste. When you do vegetables, how do you do it? I don’t have a juicer; if I make them for more than myself, I use a blender. If I am just making one, I use an immersion blender. Tips on using veggies with those tools? Thanks!
Dear Lauren,
many thanks for sharing your ideas! As a reader from Germany I unfortunately do not have the opportunity to order most of the products. As well I find it quite difficult to find organic whey (brown rice, hemp etc.) powder here in Germany.
You may have an idea which products are sold within Germany?
Many thanks for your help in advanced!
