BBC Health Headline: Wearing Helmets 'More Dangerous'

The headline should read: “Motorists Still Inconsiderate Pricks From Cyclists’ Point of View”.

A new study conducted in Britain tracked distances at which 2500 overtaking cars passed by bicyclists. It found that motorists yield the most room to a woman cyclist with no helmet on, but that they passed a male cyclist who was helmeted an average 14 cm closer. A non-helmeted male landed between the two.
It’s an interesting experiment. However I could have told you that most society’s are slightly careless as well as pretty sexist and don’t know it. I just couldn’t have backed it up.

Oh, and I’ll still be wearing my helmet when I ride so that when and if I do get hit, they’ll have to get a dent pulled instead of just having to do a quick blood and brain flecks rinse-off…

    I heard this on NPR this morning. I’m pretty sure I’m going to stick with the helmet, though, becauseI don’t think this study really works for those of us who just fall over (often) for no reason.
