Yesterday was Presidents’ Day, a time for recognizing all of our country’s presidents, past and present. When I was a youngster growing up in New York State, we celebrated Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, February 12, and George Washington’s on February 22. We had both days off from school. (However, we didn’t have a winter break, so those were our holidays between Christmas vacation and Easter vacation.)
Some schools had the day off, some offices were closed, most Federal and State offices as well. This day now combines Lincoln’s and Washington’s birthdays and recognizes the other presidents as well.
Perhaps your Alzheimer’s family member will have memories of celebrating Lincoln’s and Washington’s birthdays. My mother, a former school teacher, made sure we children were aware of the significance of these occasions.
