Using samples from an international collaboration, Bank on a Cure, researchers have been able to scan gene chips for single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that may be associated with myeloma. Myeloma aka multiple myeloma affects more than 250,000 people worldwide and is a cancer of blood plasma cells found in multiple areas of the bone marrow.
Bank on a Cure is the world’s first repository of myeloma-patient DNA collected globally through large clinical trial groups, clinical centers, hospitals, and individual patients. In a recent study presented at the 2005 American Society of Hematology, researchers found:
- SNPs that increase production of interleukin 6 or alter cell regulation may account for the the higher incidence of myeloma among African Americans.
- Some SNPs may also indicate the potential for neuropathy, nausea, bone pain and other toxic reactions to combination chemotherapy.
- Other SNPs indicate risk for blood clots associated with other therapies.
- TNF-alpha, a protein associated with inflammation is elevated in myeloma patients, but may actually delay onset of the disease because of its role in other immunological processes.
- Seven genetic variants were found to influence myeloma risk and response.
A solid step towards developing personalized medicine for myeloma prevention, treatment, and cure.

My mother and maternal grandmother both had MM. Although there isn’t supposed to be a huge genetic component to the disease, is there a way for me to get tested to find out if I have the genetic markers?

My mother died in 2004 of MM. She had two grandchildren, with AUTISM. I began to see the connection between both illnesses.
1. Glutathione Deficiency
2. Stat-1 Deficiency
3. Autoimmunity in Family
4. Borrelia Lyme/Mycoplasma
5. Susceptibility to Environmental Damage 22qr11
6. Mercury Toxicity
7. Lead Toxicity
8. VIRUSES, HHV6.7.8. CMV/EBV, Borna Viruses/Picnoviruses, Adenoviruses
9. Helmiths in blood/flukes
All of these things are shared in the same ilnesses-and I found fifty grandparents who had grandchildren with autism, who also had myeloma, you tell me?
