Too Old to Have a Baby?

Advances in science have made it much easier to get pregnant now in your 50s, and in some cases, 60s. The case of Maria del Carmen Bousada of Spain, who had twin boys at age 66 and then died recently at age 69, has brought the issue of age and pregnancy back to the forefront.

Whenever I hear this argument with friends, every person I know who had kids before age 30 thinks having kids later in life is ridiculous. Of course, not everyone is lucky enough to have kids before they are 30. It’s easy to take an arrogant view and draw a cutoff age when you already have children (and had them easily) yourself.

But life doesn’t work out the same for everyone. Besides that, people in their 40s are so much different than someone in their 40s a few years ago. I hesitate in drawing a line on what’s acceptable and really think it should depend on the individual.

What do you think?

It certainly is a personal decision and IMHO the wisdom of it depends on individual circumstances. I think the most important thing is to take care of yourself physically, spiritually, and emotionally before considering a baby (at any age). It is sad for me to know that the twins of Maria del Carmen Bousada lost their mom at age three. If you are going to have your children at an “advanced” age be certain there is a good support group willing to take over the parenting job in case you cannot complete it and take good care of yourself so you have the best chance possible to be there to raise them. I am all for responsible parenting! I did have children after the “magic” age of 30, BTW.
