As more and more North Americans struggle with weight gain and obesity, it’s clear that fad diets don’t work. We’re overfed, but undernourished. And many diets can create serious health concerns. That said, there are 10 core strategies to apply when embarking on improving one’s weight and health. But remember, there’s no magic diet or weight-loss secret.
1. Exercise appropriately. Most people envision weight loss as hitting the treadmill every day until they can’t take another step. Not only is this unsafe, but it’s also likely not helping with weight reduction. The current proven weight-loss conceit is to increase resistance training. By putting on more muscle, you’ll burn more fat. And you won’t end up looking like Sly Stallone – just leaner and a better fat-burner!
2. Plan your meals. If you’re not planning, you’re planning to fail. This is the most important rule for a proper weight optimization program. Have your (healthy) snacks at the ready, a rough idea where your meals will be, and be prepared to eat at optimal times of the day for proper fat burning. No excuses, folks. (And believe me, I’ve heard them all!) If you’re serious about reaching your optimal health, you have to put in the effort.
3. Balance insulin levels. Current research shows that weight gain and obesity are linked to an insulin imbalance. This also can be part of Metabolic Syndrome, which is an epidemic in North America and one of the biggest detriments to our health care system. Unregulated insulin levels promote fat deposition. But insulin levels can be curbed by cutting out refined carbohydrates, and adding proper fats and proteins to your diet. Plus, a high-quality fish oil and chromium are effective blood sugar/insulin stabilizers.
4. Identify food sensitivities. At The Dempster Clinic, one of our biggest initiatives is to help identify underlying food sensitivities and allergies. Advanced testing using functional medicine can help identify foods that promote weight gain through a simple IgG or ALCAT blood test.
5. Balance hormones. For some, eating well and exercising regularly are part of their everyday routine, but they still may gain weight! This is commonly caused by a disturbance in the endocrine system, and can involve imbalances with estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and cortisol. Thyroid is another hormone-producing gland that’s extremely critical to proper metabolism. An underactive thyroid gland is one of the most misdiagnosed health issues. If your TSH isn’t 1.5 mmol or less, it’s worth further investigating thyroid function.
6. Focus on being healthy, not losing weight. Many people get so caught up with obsessing about the scale that they forget: Healthy weight is just a reflection of someone whose mental, physical, and emotional state is in a balanced state.
7. Address underlying emotional issues. Not letting go of negative emotions stemming from past events can be a huge obstacle for many. Working with a health care professional to release old, unhealthy emotions has not only proven to help reduce body fat, but also reduce risk of various cancers, autoimmune conditions, and other chronic illnesses.
