Eugenics at Grand Rounds 3.25

Berci is hosting this week’s Grand Rounds 3.25 and has done a fantastic job complete with videos (although I can’t say that I appreciate the Monty Python theme much since I still just don’t get it). Two contributions that touched on genetics stood out for me:

  • baby girl feetDr. Steven Parker at the Healthy Children WebMD Blog wrote Enhance Your Kids with Drugs, Machines, and Perfect Genes. It’s a subject I’ve touched on many times before and I wrote a parenting pledge early in the life of Genetics and Health in a post about Parenting Genetically Engineered Children.
  • Mother Jones RN at Nurse Ratched’s Place wrote Crazy Genes all about the perception of mental illess over the years. She did a brilliant job finding anecdotes that are true but so off the wall you can’t believe anyone ever thought that of people with mental illness. Eugenics, of course, is featured as well.

For more on eugenics, you may be interested in the exhibit created by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum called Deadly Medicine: Creating the Master Race. Dan Nephin of Associated Press has more about the exhibit on eugenics.
