This week’s genetics quiz question:
What is genomic imprinting?
Answer:
Genomic imprinting describes the way genes are expressed (or not) depending on which parent it came from. Some imprinted genes are expressed if it was originally inherited from the mother, and others only if inherited from the father. The opposite situation in which imprinted genes are silenced can also occur.
For more on genomic imprinting see Wikipedia and my earlier post, Genes in Conflict.
