Birth control while breastfeeding is a hot topic in the parenting forum that I am a member of. What are your thoughts on this?

According to BreastFeeding Basics, there are 3 factors that ensure 98% of the time, the mom is protected against pregnancy while breastfeeding:
- the nursing mother is exclusively breastfeeding. This means that the mother is nursing frequently day and night with no supplemental feedings
- the baby is younger than 6 months of age
- the mother has not started having periods
Take note, there’s 98% chance that you won’t fall pregnant but there is still 2% chance that you can if you are not using or practising any form of birth control. I personally know a friend of mine whose children are only one year apart because my friend (the Mom) fell pregnant on her 3rd month of breastfeeding, despite the fact that she was exclusively breastfeeding, the baby was younger than 6 months and that her period has not come back.
What happened to our friend is a standing joke between us because it was the longest time for to be period-free! LOL

My hubbie likes the idea of Irish twins. I’m hoping breastfeeding works for at least another month or two (the baby is 4 months old).
