I encountered a slight problem when I broke ground for my vegetable garden last week. An underground power line! Thinking it was a tree root, I almost chopped through it when I felt my shovel hit it. Fortunately my curiosity got the better of me and I pulled it up before I cut through it. If you are breaking new ground for a garden, especially if it is in a residential area, call your local electrical company and ask where lines are. I’d call a couple of weeks before planting time, just incase you have to go through some channels to get an answer, but they are usually pretty nice about it. This particular power line was put in by my father in-law in his back yard to run power to his shed. Though I’m sure he had to report it, not sure the electric company would have that sort of thing in the general records! Never hurts to call either way! We put a 2×4 over the line so we would remember not to dig there!
