One of the hardest thing for a new homeschooler to do is to choose a homeschool curriculum. There are a ton of methods out there and all of them work. The question is, which will work for you?
Curriculum has to meet two important criteria in my book.
- Is it of interest to my child/ can he learn it
- Is it interesting to me/ can I teach it
You need to be comfortable with the curriculum you choose. And here’s a newsflash…just because you use Abeka one year does not mean that you will use it every year!
Currently I am considering going to an all inclusive homeschooling program like Switched on Schoolhouse. This is because I am busy and disorganized right now and my kids are not getting the quality of education that I usually provide. In the past I have used a variety of methods including unschooling, Charlotte Mason, and Unit Studies. Being flexible is key.
If this is your first year homeschooling buy less not more. Get some good basic materials in your house and then depend on the library to fill in. Keep your child reading good books rather than mindless fluff. Biographies, some of the classics, and a little fluff to top it all off is a good rule of thumb.
Do not under any circumstances go to a homeschool convention your first year. There is too much and you will get shell shocked. Just look at the homeschooling materials available on Amazon and choose a math book, maybe a handwriting book, and an english grammar book. History can be done from your local library with the biographies and historical fiction, as well as the History Channel if you have it. Science can be done in the same way, with the Discovery Channel.
Choose a few things that interest you and get started. Begun is half done.
