Do you have plans for Valentine's Day?

DSCN0033 I’m thinking about the ultimate Hallmark Holiday and wondering… what will we do? The KoE is pretty excited, and I think we’ll have to make our valentines next weekend if we’re going to get them done. Not that we’ve decided what we’re going to do to top the Bee Mine valentines we made last year (we made one for us, too, and it’s still on our fridge)…

But I was thinking about single moms by choice, and mothers who have decided it’s easier to be a single mother without romantic entanglements while the child is still in the house… and the newly single mothers who might not have ended up on that doorstep by choice and will find their first Valentines Day as a single parent… challenging. What’s a single mom to do?

Have a party. Do you have other single parent friends? Invite them and their children over for a celebration of happiness. You can make a cupcake pyramid, some fruit punch, a bit of coffee, and let the sugar madness begin. If you’re a craft maven, you can set up a table for the kids to make valentines. You can watch 101 Dalmatians Lady and the Tramp (thanks for the heads up, need more Nyquil)and ooh over the spaghetti scene. Or get together with your best single mama friends, and have a big slumber party. Nothing like whipping up a big batch of pancakes for friends.

Point is, Valentine’s Day is what you make it. Sure, I’ve got fantasies. But I’ve also got a kid, and this Valentine’s Day isn’t a date night — Friday the 13th is! So I think we’ll be hitting the scary movie Friday night, and settling down in a small intimate gathering of me, a single parent, and a couple of kids. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Today I told my daughter she was the love of my life and she said “Get a boyfriend.” LOL

Most years I take her to dinner and a movie for Vday. This year I heard about an Anti-Valentines Day party at a piano bar, which sounds like fun. I just have to see if I can drag any of my single friends there with me. And anyway, what better place to meet someone than a party meant for single people?

My daughter’s birthday is Feb 14. It pretty much ceased to be Valentine’s Day a long time ago, it is just ‘Grace’s Birthday’. And this year is her golden birthday (14 on the 14th) so I am spending the 14-15th at a water park with her and 4 of her friends. Yikes!

I’ve been a single mom for six years – and I do the same thing with my kids as I did when I was married — and now they are 13 and 16. They wake up to a little VDay stuffed animal and a bit of candy. Doesn’t matter if I get roses from a guy (I have) or nothing at all (that happens too). It’s about the sweetness of loving my kids.

This is great post – I am always looking for something to do on the dreaded 14th of Feb!

I do believe you mean Lady and the Tramp. You’re forgiven, though, because I doubt you have Lady and Tramp figurines anywhere in your house. Unlike, say, me ;)
