Eco-Friendly Living: New Solar-Powered Gadgets

Many before me have harnessed the power of the sun for far more noble purposes than killer tan lines. Think of our ancient ancestors, who tapped the glowing orb’s strength to spark fire, or those industrious Romans, who strategically placed windows to warm the waters of their bathhouses. That ingenuity has continued through the ages – solar-powered heaters, laptop chargers – and, yes, those outdoor lamps lining the driveway that do little more than spotlight the fact that we were too cheap to hire an electrician. And the problem with many of these easy-on-Mother-Earth gizmos is that they aren’t easy on the eyes. Fortunately, a few are bona fide head-turners. Here, a selection of the brightest solar-powered devices out there:

Geely iG Car

If the DeLorean and the Mini had a lovechild, it would look a lot like the iG. Chinese car manufacturer Geely debuted this mod micro car powered by battery and solar energy (panels are built into the hood) at the Beijing Auto Show last month. It’s slated for production in 2012. If only those gull wing doors could propel these progressive wheels to our shores.

Casio PAG110C-3 Watch

Eco-warriors heading into the woods this season will want the newest Pathfinder strapped to their wrists. Not only is this watch water-resistant, it features a digital compass, barometer, thermometer, altimeter, and solar technology that extends battery life. ($200; Amazon.com)

Tegolasolare Roof Tiles

Ready to green up the ol’ palazzo? Area Industrie Ceramiche has disguised state-of-the-art photovoltaic technology in its age-old-looking Tegosolare terracotta roof tiles. The Italian company is also working on a system to suit the architecture of U.S. dwellings. (available stateside this summer; info@areaindustrie.it)

SunJar Outdoor Lighting

A perennial summer favorite since 2006, Tobias Wong’s SunJar offers diffused mood lighting for your garden after the sun sets. Available in yellow, blue, and pink. ($39 at Generate)

  1. By solar toys - Lagi.Plan

I believe the number of eco- friendly applications is going to increase in the near future. Renewable energy sources and specifically solar energy surely show the way.

One very important factor that should be taken into consideration regards the guidance and proper education of kids, in order to think and act in an eco-friendly way, This, of course, is something that requires time.
