Finding Your Birth Family

Women family members in garden

There is a quote over at A Child Chosen from Alex Haley that talks about knowing where you come from. When you’re adopted, it’s one thing you wonder.

Don’t get me wrong, it isn’t as if you grow up with the fantasy of your “real” parents (although that’s what some people seem to believe.) Instead, it’s a matter of knowing what became of others who share your DNA. You might have a great relationship with your parents, or you might have a rough childhood like I did. It doesn’t matter. While your adoptive parents are truly your parents, you still might wonder about your birth family.

I think I’ve mentioned in the past that I’m adopted. I also grew up as an only child, and one of the things I wondered was if I had any brothers or sisters out there somewhere. I had hoped I had a sister, and ten years ago I got “my file.” The file consisted of many mismatched pages with tons of information blacked out. Not extremely informative or helpful. But I did find out one thing: that I had an older sister.

That was ten years ago. Want to find out what happened next? Tune in tomorrow!
