On Tuesday, I watched the whole thing. Did you? Did you cheer when Sotomayor gave her eloquent, moving acceptance speech? Did it make you think that this, this is a nation of which we should be proud?
I sure did. Yet another child of a single mother kicking butt and taking names, with grace, style, aplomb, and proper respect to the love and support that helped that happen.
What I absolutely do not understand is how the right can so severely snub a person who is the epitome of their values, a person who took no charity, who made her own way, who was not a burden to the system but an inspiration. Come on, people. If you don’t want to create a welfare state, then let’s celebrate those hard-working people who did it, who made it, who excelled.

A great day in American history. Some of our greatest leaders were elected or appointed with harsh criticism as much as glowing admiration. Don’t let the importance of this moment be tainted by harsh criticism. A generation from now no one will remember how it happened – just that it did.
