Game-Changers: Entrepreneurs and Social Change Q&A with Rachel Weeks of School House

We think the world needs more female entrepreneurs, and it also needs social change, so Blisstree is always on the lookout for role models who are taking matters into their own hands. We call these women The Game-Changers, and Rachel Weeks of School House is one of them.

Check out our Q&A with Rachel to find out how she’s changing the rules of the game, and what advice she has for others who want to do the same:

What does your company do?
We create trend-driven collegiate apparel in a living wage facility in Sri Lanka. Then we sell it.

How did you start it?
On a Fulbright grant to Sri Lanka, with $20,000 from the time I was hit by a car in New York while I was an undergrad. I used that capital to hire our Creative Director, Colleen McCann, and to create our first samples.

What made you want to be an entrepreneur?
It’s a creative drive, and a compulsion…I can’t imagine the world without School House.

What’s your favorite part of the job?
Sales and marketing – I love being with the customer, from the university bookstore buyers to the 18 year-olds who love our undies and our story.

What’s your advice to new social entrepreneurs?
“In order to do good, you must first do well.” A North Carolina businessman told me that recently and I loved it. Focus on creating demand for something independent of your socially responsible motives. Create value and profit, and your impact will scale with you.
