There’s only 15 days until Christmas. Only 14 shopping days. Are you done with your Christmas shopping?
Shopping for my teens is always so difficult. Everything they want is so expensive. They both want an iTouch (which is over $200) and a laptop (in their dreams). Or they just want money. But money doesn’t really fill up the space under the Christmas tree. But I think I have it covered this year.
My daughter got a cheap guitar a while back. She doesn’t know how to play it yet, but she tries. She makes up her own songs and even started her own band (with her two brothers). But she’s not the only one that loves to play her guitar. I can often find my 16-year-old strumming away on the guitar. And he can actually play some real songs…even though the guitar is missing a couple strings. So we got him a bass guitar. It’s a cheap one, but it’s a good start for him.
On our vacation last week we were pulling on to the interstate after stopping for dinner when we heard a clunk and a thump. “What was that?” we exclaimed. After a quick check around the car we realized the 14-year-old couldn’t find his cell phone. Since then we’ve scoured the whole car. No cell phone. So guess what we’re getting him for Christmas. A new cell phone. With a QWERTY keyboard. He’s actually been asking for a new cell phone; one with a keyboard so he can text better. Kids and their texting.
My 9-year-old daughter is a creative. She loves to sing, dance, and draw. She’s easy to buy for. I could buy her drawing paper and markers and she would be thrilled. But for the last couple years she has been begging for a telescope. So that’s what Santa’s [finally] bringing her this year. I loved astronomy when I was a little girl. I even took an astronomy class with a friend. It was a blast. I can’t wait to sit outside looking at the stars and the moon with her.
As I said before, my 9-year-old thinks he’s a teenager. He wants everything his older brothers have; a computer, a cell phone, a World of Warcraft account and mature video games, etc. Since I’ve nixed pretty much all of that, I decided to settle on an Apple iPod Shuffle. His first grown up tech purchase. No more little kid presents for him. I’m going to add a bunch of his favorite music (heavy metal, ick) so it’s ready right out of the box. He’s going to love it.
So what did you get your tweens and teens?

For my 12 yo daughter: Mario and Sonic at the Olympics Wii game, iPod speakers, Kubit2Me Truth or Dare Game (I think I found this from a link on your site, actually), Dr. Horrible DVD (that’s for both of us. Love it!), an iTunes gift card, and Fred Figglehorn and Charlie the Unicorn t-shirts. Whew.
Remember Lucy telling Charlie Brown, “I never get what I really want….. real estate!”
Yeah.
My kids are getting a hole in the ground. In Africa.
Or you could call it, water.
And for good measure, we’re turning off the water one day before anyone showers. And when they ask where the water is, I’m going to give them each a bucket and point them in the direction of the duck pond at the end of the next street over.
Oh the baby won’t get it- she’s only 2. So she’s getting a handmade doll my good friend found in the Bargain Box at the Goodwill.

(And in the spirit of giving them some Presence, after all, and in the water theme, they’re each getting a ticket to Schlitterbahn too, to use next time it’s warm enough.)
