Hoover Dam

Location: Hoover Dam (or Boulder Dam)
Destination: Black Canyon on the border of Nevada and Arizona
Country: USA
Year Taken: 2006

Photographer: Jon Rochetti
Blog: The DC Traveler

Hoover Dam is a picturesque dam located in Black Canyon on the Colorado River, that forms Lake Meade.  It’s the second highest dam in the U.S., at 726 feet (220 meters), and the concrete is over 650 feet thick at its base.

The dam and river border Nevada and Arizona, about 30 miles from Las Vegas.

In this photo, taken in 2003, you can see cars driving on the roadway (U.S. Route 93) over the dam.  I recently heard that cars are no longer allowed to cross over Hoover Dam for security reasons.

The dam and associated hydroelectric turbine-generator power plant, supplies power as far away as Los Angeles and provides about 15% of the city’s electricity.
