How to deal with a smart aleck

Back talk. Pushing your buttons. It’s insane.

You tell your kid not to do something, and damn if he doesn’t do it one. more. time.

How do you deal with that? Well, Scholastic’s parenting site has a few ideas for us… but they don’t seem to be working here at Casa Solomother. Ignore it? He does it ad nauseum–he won’t stop. Model correct behavior? He doesn’t notice. Ask for respect and rewording? He’ll correct himself, and then go right back to his old shennanigans.

And in the meantime he’s driving his grownups nuts. Which is probably what he wants, right?

You and me both, sista. Sure, the article says he is just starting to test boundaries, but I’m afraid that once you’ve “just started” for the 500th time, you’re kind of a pro.

    Thanks for the link!

Didn’t read the scholastic site, but when mine starts to push my buttons, I physically leave the room. Then he knows he’s not getting any attention anymore, and it usually stops instantly.

I have no tips, only sympathy. My little guy has turned into Attitude Man and it’s NOT FUNNY. I’ve been sending him to his room whenever he gives me “the face” or “those eyes.” When he’s ready to be respectful, he comes back down. But that doesn’t mean he won’t be doing “the face” on his way back into the kitchen. It’s maddening.
