I think I'm finally sick of being out of shape

Hanoi Exercises on Flickr I went to my favorite consignment store and came away with nothing today. Well, that’s not actually true. While no one gave me a swift kick in the rear, I caught a good look at mine in the full length mirror today and boy howdy, am I looking middle-aged from the ribcage down.

Pear shaped. Saggy. Rubenesque. In a bad way.

I hate exercise. I don’t go to the gym. I have nightmares where I try to run and end up moving in slow motion — these nightmares are so vivid that I am not certain I could run in real life. I was a relatively athletic young woman; I need to find that spark again.

Part of what’s holding me back is that I know this is going to hurt. Part of what’s motivating me is the fact that inertia is hurting me more. I work 60 hour weeks most of the time, but I’ve got to find an hour a day to get myself into shape. Anyone out there going to be my exercise buddy? I need someone, or a bunch of someones, to motivate me. I don’t want to be overweight and sick. I want to be a good-looking 65 year old at my son’s wedding. Hell, I want to be alive to see grandkids… dare I ask for great grandkids? I want to have fun running around with my son. And I mean that literally. There’s a kite festival on the Mall. There’s the beach just a short drive away. There are races to be run and frisbees to be tossed. I can’t be much fun if I’m dragging this caboose around behind me.

And let’s not forget, if ever I’m going to date again…

I don’t have much of a plan, as of yet. I’m going to get into the free gym at work on Tuesday and check out the machines. I’ve got good music on my little iPod Nano (thanks so much, my friend, for that incredible gift). I’ll go to the store and break my commitment to the Compact and buy myself some baggy sweats, new! if that’s what it takes to get my pear shaped self into the gym every day at lunch time. So, who’s with me?

This week’s goals:

  • go to the gym every day and try out one of the machines for 45 minutes. Tuesday through Friday.
  • Eat a modest breakfast every day and a healthy salad for lunch every day.
  • Start a food journal to really track all the snacks, sneaky eating, comfort foods, and weird stuff I’m doing (like finishing my son’s dinner! BLECH!)
  • Eliminate all refined sugars from diet (see above)

Seriously. Who’s up off the couch with me? I’ll be honest here and let you know how I’m doing.

Kerri, I haven’t been able to get to the gym this week. I only have my lunch hours to get things done like oh, grocery shopping! So that’s what I did today. Yesterday I did get to walk to the clothes store for new undies for the Kid, but couldn’t walk back cause the line took too long. Sigh.

I am in. :) After gaining back 15 of the 30 pounds I lost last year, I’m trying to get back on track! Back to my calorie counting, working out. Going up and down the step/stair while I’m watching TV or reading a book (which gets me away from the computer a bit, too!) works for me. That, lifting a little, and crunches. It worked last time. I’m hoping again!

    Cheering you on!!!!!

Hi, Tom! I work on the fourth floor, but I don’t go up and down the stairs much. I’ll try to do it more often, you’re right.

How many floors in your building?

Although I warm up on a Stair Master, I find that climbing five flights of stairs five times is a better workout than an hour on ANY machine.

Take the elevator down to spare the knees.

Also, it’s muscle that burns fat. Be sure to “lift” to gain extra muscle. Then you will be burning many more calories while idle, even asleep!

I’ve been bitten by the same bug. I started gyming it up about 2 weeks ago.. so far, so good. I’ve been gaining muscle, not losing weight (but not gaining any, either). So.. I’d say it’s a big accomplishment.

Queen, every little bit helps. I’m hoping to get back into bellydancing. That’s my kind of exercise!

:) Kate, we’re too fabulous to be flabby. Let’s do it!

I can’t promise to do the whole gym thing…but I will resolve to walk the kids to school every morning instead! I get too bored in the gym!

Good luck! I hope to join you on your gym resolution.
