Is Stella McCartney an Eco-Hypocrite?

Stella McCartney, the English fashion designer, is reportedly in the hospital giving birth to her fourth child today. We’re happy for the not-new Mom and wish her family the best, but then again, isn’t she supposed to be a huge environmentalist? And she’s having her fourth kid? What now? The designer is an outspoken vegan and advocate of animal rights, but she’s also very into promoting an earth-friendly agenda. On World Environment Day, her West Hollywood store was turned into an eco-party, where she told the audience via tape-recording: “L.A., you drive too much. Take a walk. Ride the bus.”

Her advice is sound, but her child-bearing habit seems a little inconsistent with her eco-minded attitude. Population growth is often cited as a significant cause of environmental decline, suggesting that those of us with access to birth control might be well-advised to put a cap on the size of our families (just like we should the size of our cars, homes, and serving sizes of meat).

Congratulations, Stella, but perhaps it’s time to find some vegan condoms?

The rational argument is as follows:
There are too many primitive thinking people in the world but if everyone was vegan, non-violent and cognitive in their thinking, there would not be too many people in the world.
The conundrum for the true vegan who focuses on teaching a moral existence to those who are less able to naturally be compassionate, is whether to lead by example in absolutely everything or lead by logic, and focus on the most important moral issue – non-violence towards both human animals and non-human animals. Logically, it is better to produce 4 children that will be conditioned to help create a more compassionate generation who can go on to educate the majority who have been conditioned to cause suffering.
After all, religion, capitalism, and other tools of the immoral human continue to condition their members to have as many children as they like. A logical, compassionate movement that naturally opposes violence rather than supports it or condones it is more likely to succeed if it is strong in numbers.
Those who are ignorant of moral veganism will often consider the environmental movement as intrinsic to a vegan belief. However, veganism is the holy grail of morality. Other important ethical causes logically fall in behind veganism because of intelligent thinking.
Veganism, compassion and logic first. In this respect, Stella McCartney is furthering the most important cause on the planet for those who are evolved in their thinking.

I agree that four kids IS WAAAAAY TOO MANY. But Stella McCartney is still a huge supporter of animal and environmental rights and she has done so much for both causes. I’ve yet to see any other high-fashion designer who uses no animal materials such as leather, fur, wool, etc in their clothes. Her message is very valuable in the fashion industry and she’s a great example for all those selfish fur-wearing fashionista wannabes out there.

THIS EXACTLY! I don’t know of any other designer who bravely refuses to use leather or fur. Stella is a major asset to fashion and her compassion and kindness are much needed. BTW, I love her chic yet cruelty-free handbags as well. If only I could afford more than two per year. LOL

“Besides, having four eco-conscious children is much better than having one or two who waste resources. Reproduction of values often occurs with biological reproduction. She could be changnig the world one baby at a time.”

This has got to be the most self indulgent hilarious piece of dribble I’ve read in a while. Why would her children be any more ecologically conscious simply because mama claims to be? As for reproduction of values. Well let’s hope not. 4 more self indulgent Euro thinking they can make the world a better place is the last thing we need. She can have as many children as she good and well pleases to have, I don’t care, but I sure hope that they’re more interested in teaching sustainable health and beauty instead of plastic packaging it, and shipping it around the world with petrol.

    Let’s call a spade a spade.

Of course it’s hypocritical, but it’s typical of the “know it all hipster” sort. What more would you expect.

Good points, and worth thinking about. People don’t like it to face it, and everyone is very defensive about this – but the fact is, we, as humans, are animals, and there are too many of us on this planet. Look at the number of cars on the road. Governments won’t support population control because it goes against economic growth and human nature, but we must face the need for it. Check this website: http://www.poodwaddle.com/worldclock.swf. Scary!

One only needs to look at the vast imbalance of wealth in our world to realize that the earth is perfectly capable of sustaining a much larger population–it’s just US that are screwing it up. The US alone is capable of producing so much food and renewable resources that caps are placed on their production! It’s only the capitalist, profit-minded society that tries to convince us that there isn’t enough to go around. Of course there’s enough–but we’ve got to watch that bottom line!

Our best means for truly changing the world is by raising educated, free-thinking, and ecologically conscious children. They are our greatest resource, as a map of the world to come. Who knows that Stella’s children might not go on to be great advocaters, educators, and scientists that can change the face of our future? Humanity will continue to multiply the ignorant, uneducated, and powerless–lets not remove the influence of people like Stella from it for the sake of a few less mouths to feed.

As an addendum, to villify a woman for choosing to have a child is, by reasonable logic, as reprehensible as villfying her for choosing not to.

I am so thoroughly ashamed of BlissTree, I can confidently say that this website will never again appear on my screen.

Goodness. Leave Stella alone. There are many women who won’t be able to have children so let Stella do it. She’s happy. They’re happy. She can afford it. Her parents raised wonderfully productive children and she will also. Maybe one of them will discover a cure for something. You never know. Stella’s four kids are not the reason the earth is suffering. Not even close. Someone do a survey on how many individuals have large families and come back and see if your opinion is the same. Oh, wait. Surveys create an imbalance in our environmental health. All that thinking….

Seriously ridiculous comment. For all the good that Stella McCartney has done, it is poor taste to try to nail her for slipping up. There’s enough legitimately anti eco stuff going on in the world to write about, and this is a pathetic attempt to stir up some gossip.

This earth can easily sustain a much larger population if we simply quit consuming so much and living in a more earth friendly manner. I am thoroughly disgusted with this article. You obviously have not done your research on sustainability. What an outdated and selfish notion.

THANK YOU for this post. I mean it. Four children…so not environmentally friendly. Want a big family? Adopt a few.

Having a child is not littering.

How dare you. No one should have more children than they can afford to care for physically and emotionally. By those standards, I’m pretty sure Ms. Mccarthey is doing just fine. I thought Blisstree had hit the bottom when it went all righteous on overweight celebrities. I was wrong.

People produce so much waste…can kind of see briana’s point. It doesn’t seem like S McCartney is a hypocrite though, but maybe. It’s a tough call. I’ve always thought plastic diapers were a huge, huge eco waste but maybe she uses something friendlier. This article doesn’t seem judgmental though but even if it were so what?

What? You’re kidding, right? Surely you’re not critiquing/judging her for having another child.

Besides, having four eco-conscious children is much better than having one or two who waste resources. Reproduction of values often occurs with biological reproduction. She could be changnig the world one baby at a time.

“Reproduction of values often occurs with biological reproduction.”

my thoughts exactly. the more environmentally conscious humans the merrier, at this stage. we need all the help we can get.
