DIY Beauty: Make Your Own Green Perfume

If you’ve  been keeping up with Blisstree, you know that we’re not fans of the “fragrance” ingredient found in many perfumes and soaps. If you haven’t been keeping up with us, please leave now. Just kidding – we’ll bring you up to speed. When you see “fragrance” on the back of your perfume bottle, you are spraying chemicals on yourself that are linked to hormone disruptions and allergic reactions. Are conscientious consumers destined to an odorless existence?

A recent New York Times article, “Making Flowers Into Perfume,” shared the secret of natural, DIY perfumers, with instructions for making your own non-toxic perfume:

What you need:

Your fave flowers or herbs

Alcohol, preferably Organic Neutral Grape Alcohol (more realistically, Everclear)

A square foot of fiberglass netting

A clean mason jar

Directions:

1. “Clover dry” the petals or leaves by airing them out until they’re limp.

2. Drop whole petals or leaves into the jar and pour in only enough alcohol to cover the top.

3. Slosh the mixture around a bit.

4. Let it sit for a day, and then strain out the petals or leaves through the netting. Don’t add any more alcohol.

5. Instead, add more petals.

6. Wait a day, strain out the petals, then add more petals. You see where this is going? Usually it takes around 5-10 times to get the right scent. Don’t be afraid to mix and match.
