I’ll be moving with my kitty soon. I know that some cats get very nervous and hide under the bed for days after a move, but Choco is adventurous and likes to climb all over the boxes. Yeah, that’s him in the photo after the last move. Obviously, my biggest worry is safety.
If you’re moving with kitty, here are some simple steps that will help keep things safe and less stressful:
• Kitty Palace — Confine your cat or cats to one room with all of their essentials. This will keep them from wandering out the door when movers are around, and allow them to have a safe haven from all the action.
• Signage — You may even want to put a note on the door that alerts movers that the room is “Reserved for Kitty. Do not enter.”
• Trade Scents — Even before you move into the new place, take a blanket and wipe it along walls to pick up the scent of the future home for kitty. Place the blanket in the cat’s current home so he can get used to the new scent before the move. You’ll also want to place familiar toys and beds with kitty after the move as well.
• Update — Quickly change your cat’s collar ID and microchip contact information. You’ll also want to let the vet’s office know about your new contact info.
• Just in Case — Make sure you have a current photo of kitty on hand just in case he slips out of reach during the move.
• Cat Proof — If your cat is like mine, he adores things that are bad for him: rubber bands, tape and plastic. Make sure kitty doesn’t eat any packing materials.
