New Eco-Label for TVs

The New York Times has the scoop on the soon to be coming new TV eco-label.

TVs are already labeled (or not) as Energy Star but this new label, which is maybe going to be called Epeat for TV, will go a step further. According to the Times, the label will be modeled after the already established Epeat (Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool) standard for computers. Epeat standards right now, deal with how eco-friendly computers are as a whole based on 51 pieces of  earth-friendly criteria.

I think that extra labeling can’t hurt, especially since there’s more to a product than it’s energy efficiency. Many things matter when it come to being eco-friendly. I also agree though with the Times note that some think more labeling will only confuse the issue. I get a lot of emails from folks asking about eco-topics and eco-labels are in the top three – people are already confused by labels, and it’s not a surprise. According to ecolabelling.org, “Market research indicates that there are over 500,000 ecolabelled products on the market right now.

Maybe some sort of combined energy efficient / eco-friendly label should be developed – what do you think?
