Pissed-off parents are the worst. How they can take something as simple as the name of an animal and turn it into something that is deeply scandalous, I don’t know. But nevertheless, a group of parents at the Corner Canyon High School in Utah made sure the school’s team name and mascot wouldn’t be “cougar” because, you know, it’s such a vulgar and offensive term.
Apparently, the parents were upset over the word’s “negative double entendre”. Yes, Cougar Town has brought a renew light to the term which can describe an older woman sexually seducing a younger man, but come on, a cougar is also a super cool animal that can jump up to 18 feet off the ground and run 45 miles per hour. Who wouldn’t want that?
But despite the fact that 23% of the students voted for the name, the always-uptight Board of Education voted to pull the name and replace it with another not-so-offensive one–the Chargers. Their superintendent, David Doty stated in a memo:
Since the last Board meeting, we have received numerous e-mail messages and phone calls from parents and patrons in Draper asking us to reconsider the inclusion of “Cougars” as a mascot option. Opposition to the ‘Cougars’ focuses on a concern that the mascot, combined with the school’s blue/white/silver color scheme, will be too similar to Brigham Young University. Many also have commented on the negative double entendre of the word ‘cougar.
Oh, poor parents who don’t want to explain to their kids that sometimes the word “cougar” might not always mean the giant cat. Maybe instead of constantly feeling like they need to shelter their kids from the world, parents could actually use this as a discussion point. That is, if it ever got brought up. Which it probably wouldn’t because what teen watches Cougar Town? And what’s so wrong with an older woman dating a younger man anyway?

The media has turned the word “cougar” into a derogatory term used to shame women who violate social norms by dating younger men.
All they need to do know is redefine “Charger” to something ridiculous–like a young male who likes Cougars. :)
