Semanta Santa, as it is known, takes place between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday. There is a huge event on Palm Sunday wherein images of Jesus and the Holy Virgin of Sorrow are carried from their churches through the city on the shoulders of citizens who also carry lanterns while dressed in purple robes with white waistbands.

Similar processions continue all week with special celebrations on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday.
