New York Senator Charles Schumer has already made his opinion on alcoholic energy drinks like Four Loko quite clear: They are “spreading like a plague across the country” with “deadly consequences”, he said last month while urging New York officials to ban the party drink. Now Schumer is on another rampage–this time in an effort to keep a new inhalable form of caffeine off store shelves. To which we say: Thank goodness at least one politician has some sense.
In a press conference the other day, the good Senator said the latest party drug, AeroShot, shouldn’t be sold in the U.S.–at least not until the FDA reviews it. But that hasn’t stopped people from buying their caffeine fix online.
Containing the same amount of caffeine as a large cup of coffee, AreoShot contains powdered caffeine in a capsule the size of a Chapstick. Its manufacturer, Breathable Foods, claims AeroShot is simply a “party accessory” and–get this–is safe for people as young as 12 years old. Because, you know, 12-year-olds have so many late-night soirees to attend.
But Schumer sees right through this and, just like his stance against Four Loko, he wants this drug banned from shelves too:
The truth is, AeroShot is nothing more than a club drug or a party enhancer, designed to give the user the ability to drink until they drop.
Some doctors also agree and are concerned about its addictive properties. Cardiologist Dr. Henock Saint-Jacques added:
There is a tendency, you want to work for today, you want to work for the next exam, the next night you want to stay awake, and you can put yourself in an addictive spiral that you cannot get yourself out.
Unless Schumer succeeds in getting the FDA to review AeroShot, it is slated to hit the shelves in New York and Boston next month–a move that will surely not offer any value to our health. In our society of “gotta-have-it-now” attitudes, an inhalable form of caffeine is just one more quick-fix for those who are over-tired and over-worked. Perhaps, instead of using the drug to party longer, we should listen to our bodies and simply go home when we’re tired. A radical concept, we know!
