Playboy Playmate Claire Sinclair got a three-day emergency restraining order against boyfriend Marston Hefner, Hugh Hefner’s 21-year-old son. Marston was arrested Sunday night for misdemeanor domestic violence for kicking and punching Sinclair at the couple’s Los Angeles home.
I wrote about Marston Hefner’s arrest yesterday, because it happened to occur the same day that Chris Brown was performing at the Grammy Awards. Yes, some of us here are part of the chorus of folks who don’t think it’s cool that Brown beating up on Rihanna has been glibly dismissed by so many people (including Grammy producers). I think it sends a bad message about domestic violence, which is still a societal problem in America, and not some isolated youthful indiscretion here and there.
I don’t think porn causes domestic violence. I wrote yesterday that being Hugh Hefner’s son, Marston’s violence against his girlfriend isn’t surprising. A Blisstree commenter on Facebook called it “an awful, snide, and unfounded bit of over-reactionary snark” and noted that “one might find Playboy or even pornography distasteful, but they do NOT automatically equal disrespect to women, or approval of violence toward them.”
I agree! And don’t even find Playboy or pornography in general distasteful. I certainly didn’t mean to imply everyone in the adult entertainment industry approved of violence against women, or all women in the porn industry were somehow victims forced or shamed into it. I’m a longtime fan of $pread Magazine, Chris Kraus and the writings of other proud/defiant sex workers (including Diablo Cody). I’ve written before in defense of strippers’ and strip clubs’ and porn stars‘ rights. I can’t stand the patronizing anti-sex-trafficking stuff like the kind produced by Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore.
But come on—Hugh Hefner had a reality TV show featuring him and three girlfriends. He keeps a varying number of them on hand like pets or employees. He gives them curfews. I can totally see why a girl would be into it for a while. Same goes for being in porn, stripping, being an escort, sugar baby, hooker. I think women make reasonable choices to do these things all the time.
But clearly Hugh Hefner does not promote, by fatherly example, the idea that women are totally valuable or autonomous human beings and not possessions. Whether Hef has actually committed assault himself is irrelevant.
Yesterday, Sinclair said she wouldn’t press charges against Marston if he would admit to the assault.
I want him to admit that he did hit me more than once. If he can do all of that and get help, I will never press charges. That’s all that I want at this point. Playboy let me know this afternoon that he will be doing this, so I just hope they stick to their word.”
Hugh Hefner just hopes these two crazy kids can work things out: “If they care about each other, they’ll patch it up,” he told People.

I don’t think you can really blame Hugh Hefner or playboy for what his son did. Just having an absent father (who wasn’t really absent he lived next door) Who has a girlfriend or girlfriends does not teach that child to hit or disrespect women. Further I have never heard of Mr. Hefner hitting any of his girlfriends before so I doubt his son learned that behavior from him.
Point taken, but I think you can see that Hef isn’t exactly addressing the problem either.
“If they care about each other, they’ll patch it up” is not helping.
