Ten Ways to Remove Snow From Your Yard

You’ve got snow. More snow than you can shake a stick at. (Where did we get that saying anyway? Why would we want to shake sticks at things?) Anyway, now you need to get rid of it, but how? Here are ten ways you can get rid of that extra snow:

  1. Call Vancouver, apologize for the obvious delivery mix up and offer to let them haul it all away for free.
  2. Build an enormous family sized igloo and move in for the next few weeks.
  3. Rent a giant walk in freezer and fill it with snowballs and snowmen. Then, in the middle of the summer, auction them off to people who are desperate for any reminder of cool winter weather.
  4. Make the largest batch of snow cream known to man and claim the Guinness Book of World Records title. (Or the biggest snowball.)
  5. Send my dog out to eat in all. Every time I let him out for a walk, he comes in with what one person dubbed “rabies mouth” from eating snow and having it get all over his muzzle.

More seriously:

  1. Hire someone to shovel or plow you out. If you only have a garden shovel, it is worth paying someone and avoiding 20 years of future back pain.
  2. Buy a low tech snow remover. (I actually want one of these. Environmentally friendly and useful.)
  3. Get a snow blower. (Just be sure you don’t overdo it. They can still be pretty hard to control and anyone with a bad heart should absolutely go with option one.)
  4. Add a plow attachment to your truck or lawn tractor and plow yourself out. (You can also look into earning some extra cash by setting up a small snow removal business and getting snow plowing contracts in December, before the snow starts flying.)
  5. Shovel it yourself. Just be sure to take frequent breaks and don’t make your scoops of snow too big.

How are you getting rid of all that snow?

I let all the kids come over and make snowmen, snow art, snowball fight/war, etc. By the time they are done it is someone else’s problem or gone. Either way I win.
