the gifts you can always give your children

Deborah Ng over at Simply Thrifty wrote a lovely post about the other gifts she and her husband have given her son, who celebrated a birthday yesterday. Gifts of artistry and competence. Gifts of creativity and time spent with family.

Don’t ever put yourself down for what you can’t buy, single mothers. Give your children what they really need, and you’re going fine.

Ike, it works for me. The days I remember best with my son are the simplest ones.

Great post. I’ll reiterate what so many parenting articles say as well – how about the gift of just being a kid? Not being overly scheduled and having time to do kid things? Tonight my daughters and I went to the pool at the Y, where they played a simple game of tossing a tennis ball among 7 other kids. It was great to watch the expressions of joy on their faces and also see them including new kids who wanted to join the game. This was a simple pleasure for me, and a gift to them.
