If you’ve been thinking about planting a vegetable, or herb garden, but haven’t taken the plunge yet, this is your year. With unemployment and food prices on the rise, and the recent issues with salmonella in peanut products, and last summer’s salmonella problems in tomatoes and other fresh vegetables, now is a great time to know where your food comes from.
There are also health questions about some of the fertilizers, additives, growth hormones, and pesticides found in supermarket foods. Worried about genetically altered crops, and whether they are healthy for your body? When you grow your own food you can improve your soil with compost, save your own seeds or buy them from a reputable source, grow your garden organically, and control pests naturally.
- A couple packets of seeds are a small cost for all the rewards you can receive from growing your own garden.
- You don’t even have to devote a large area to your vegetable garden. Just tuck a few plants in between your flowers, or in a couple containers.
Are you planning to grow your own vegetable or herb garden this summer?

I always do herbs and maybe tomatoes, but I don’t have a large sunny area to do a real vegetable garden. If I did, I would do some vegetable gardening. I have been reading that more people are going to do this because of the economy, and seed sales are up.
