Sad news came out today. Whitney Houston, the troubled 48 year old singer, has passed away. Her death came just a few days after the star was photographed intoxicated outside an LA nightclub. After a long battle with drug addiction, the singer was trying to stay sober, but tonight’s news proves that recovery is not something easily won.
Details on the cause of her death are not yet known, but she was found in a bathtub in her hotel room Saturday night. Houston has been stuck in a long battle with drugs and alcohol, and on Thursday she was photographed during what seemed to be a relapse. She appeared disheveled and disoriented in front of a club, with blood dripping down her leg, she was said to be belligerent and getting into an arguement with “X Factor” finalist Stacy Francis. According to TMZ, she was partying loudly at the Beverly Hills Hilton on Friday night as well.
Beverly Hills police have confirmed that the singer died in her room at the Beverly Hilton hotel. Houston was scheduled to play a pre-Grammys concert at the Beverly Hilton, which went on as scheduled.
Houston was considered by many to have been the most talented vocalist of her generation. But talent is not an inhibitor for addiction, and throughout her marriage to Bobby Brown, Houston was hobbled by demons that she couldn’t beat.
Last year she reentered rehab to treat her crack cocaine addiction. And this year, it seemed like she was on the verge of another comeback. She recently costarred with former American Idol contestant Jordin Sparks in the yet to be released film Sparkle. And she was on tap to play a pre-Grammys Awards party at Tru Hollywood nightclub on Saturday night.
But wanting to overcome addiction and actually doing so are two different things. Whitney often talked of her struggles with drugs and her interest to overcome them. But in the end, she couldn’t do it.
As she told ABC’s Diane Sawyer in 2002: ”The biggest devil is me. I’m either my best friend or my worst enemy.”
