If Lindsay Lohan isn’t making a strong enough case against plastic surgery, Cate Blanchett is offering her voice of reason. The 42-year-old actress recently told FASHION etc that she’s frightened of going under the knife, echoing our sentiment over the trend in young, beautiful actresses altering their appearance before aging is even a concern.
She explained that she likes to keep her beauty routine simple:
“We’re always looking for the new thing,” she said. “I’m very old fashioned … We do so much to ourselves, I don’t know whether [from] boredom or what. It’s like, do less! Read a book, go for a walk!”
And, while it should be said that she’s actually out there promoting a skin care line that runs about $100 for a jar of lotion, her down-to-earth approach to beauty is still worth our admiration:
“There’s been a decade or probably more of people doing interventions on their faces and their bodies, and now people are seeing that [in the] long term, it’s not so great,” she said. “I’m not sitting on a soapbox telling women what they should and shouldn’t do. I just know what works for me. I’d just be too frightened about what it means long-term. Looking at women in their 20s doing this stuff, in the end all you see is the work. It doesn’t fill me with admiration; it fills me with pity.”
Some have pointed out that Blanchett is fortunate enough to have skin that conforms to Hollywood’s ideals, but still: These are words of sanity, whatever kind of skin you’ve got.
