Drop Dead Ads Banned Because Models Were Too Skinny

Score one for real women with real bodies everywhere.

After receiving a complaint that the ads for Drop Dead, a British clothing line, were irresponsible and offensive for featuring a too-thin underweight model in a bikini, the Advertising Standards Authority has banned the ads.

In a statement, the ASA said that it considered the young model too skinny:

In the bikini images her hip, rib and collar bones were highly visible. We also noted that in the bikini and denim shorts images, hollows in her thighs were noticeable and she had prominent thigh bones. We considered that in combination with the stretched out pose and heavy eye makeup, the model looked underweight in the pictures.

Since the ads were targeted to young women and teens, the ASA felt they could portray an unrealistic body image–something we know to be a major contributor to unhealthy eating disorders and low self-esteem.

This isn’t the first time the ASA has come to our rescue and banned unrealistic images of women in the media. In July of this year, they banned two L’Oreal cosmetics ads featuring Christy Turlington and Julia Roberts following complaints that they had been digitally manipulated.

Now if we could just get them to ban runway shows where models starve themselves to look “good”.

I saw the victorias secret show last night horrible.
It is so sad and so dangerous, that these women are the rolemodels for our teenage daughters. Nobody is taking their responsability.
If our children use drugs or liquer everbody is upset.
But when it comes to stimulating Anorexic behaviour nobody cares.
These women do not represent the majority of real women with curves.
The women look like skeletons but because they are models they are beautiful. The media and fashion industry are stimulating this dangerous image of women. They should take more responsability.
