Karl Lagerfeld Says Adele Is ‘Too Fat’—Because That’s Original

Karl Lagerfeld called Adele ‘too fat’ while contributing as a guest editor for Paris’ Metrowhich isn’t surprising, given his reputation for providing inflammatory headline fodder. Throwing insults may be part of Lagerfeld’s brand, but couldn’t he come up with something a little more original than fat-shaming in fashion?

Metro published a random collection of the Chanel Creative Director’s quotes on random topics, including Michelle Obama, Greece, and sustainable fashion. But when asked about Lana del Ray, he sought occasion to put down Adele’s body and, weirdly, champion implants as a part of a ‘modern’ look:

I prefer Adele and Florence Welch. But as a modern singer she is not bad.The thing at the moment is Adele. She is a little too fat, but she has a beautiful face and a divine voice. Lana del Rey is not bad at all. She looks very much like a modern-time singer. In her photos she is beautiful. Is she a construct with all her implants? She’s not alone with implants.

Lagerfeld also famously stated that “no one wants to see curvy women,” but he also hired The Gossip‘s heavy lead singer Beth Ditto to headline a Fendi party in 2009.

Though his weight statements are probably just another part of inflammatory shtick, we got tired of fat jokes a long time ago. And coming from someone in the fashion-industry, where weight and body ideals are actually a serious issue, fat-shaming just isn’t a good look.

But the real question is does anyone want to see the combination-look of George Washington and Michael Jackson for men?

You know, I love fashion. I appreciate that Karl Lagerfeld is a big name in fashion, although Chanel has never been my cup of tea.

That said, seriously, who is he to say anything? “I know what people want! I am God! I proclaim this insanely successful and popular singer too fat!”

Shove it up your ass, Karl.
