She’s on the cover of the new Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition; clearly, Kate Upton is not fat. But the fact that the 19-year-old model seems to have a healthy handle on her body and eating habits is a good enough excuse for everyone to talk about her weight, and chastise her for not watching it like a hawk.
The New York Post ran a story today about how Upton almost threw away her chance to be on the SI cover because she was overeating. According to a friend, she was gaining so much weight that she required an intervention to get her diet and fitness efforts back on track.
The all-American beauty’s close-knit circle sat her down and gave it to her straight: watch your diet, or you won’t be on the cover of SI next year.
Upton’s friends knew landing on the same cover once graced by icons like Christie Brinkley and Elle Macpherson would catapult her career. But first, they had to scare her straight.
“She’s not your typical model,” a friend said. “She will eat anything. She’s not assuming. She’s not into herself. She’s not very affected.”
Upton may be young, she could be naive (but to be honest, I know nothing about her personality). But the last time I checked, no woman needed reminding to feel judged for their weight. And I highly doubt that someone working in the modeling industry would need extra pressure to watch their diet and slim down.
According to the Post’ sources, Upton reassured friends that she would get her weight under control. And she was recently quoted saying that she maintains her body largely by focusing on fitness, not cutting back on calories:
I never deprive myself. If I’m craving something once a week, then I’ll go have it. Ice cream or whatever, I just eat the foods I like.
I have to give credit to my trainer. He definitely kept me motivated in staying in shape.
But she also said something interesting:
I’ve always been naturally curvy, but of course I had to get used to being in the public eye.
Meaning: She’s got a naturally great body, but now that she’s famous, she’ll get fat-shamed because she isn’t starving herself.
Upton’s body may pander to certain tastes (SI editor M.J. Daly thinks she “embodies the sophistication and sexiness” called for in their Swimsuit Edition), but at least she presents some variety to the rail-thin mold of many models and celebs. Fat-shaming her for looking different—or eating more—is just not cool.

I cannot think of a better way to completely discredit someone’s judgement other than calling this beautiful young lady fat. If she is fat, my dream is to find a “fat” lady just…like…her!
She is on the fat side . I saw the sports illustrated and every girl inside should have been on the cover…not sure why they picked her .
On what planet is this gorgeous woman fat? Apparently, in the modeling world, non-emaciated = fat. She looks way healthier than the skeletal waifs with fake breasts that typically grace SI.
Straight men LOVE a body like Kate’s…only catty women and gay men think she is fat. Get real people – idiots in the fashion world hate voluptuous women – which is what straight men want. We hate the stick thin “fashion” models without any fun parts to play with.
whats even more horrible is the OBVIOUS photoshopping on the pics. she is a gorgeous girl and I doubt they really needed to do anything to the pics. pretty sad if you ask me :(
She looks gorgeous. Good for her for being healthy and working out. People need to stop hating and talking about how she needs to starve herself, when there’s millions of obese and overweight people in this country.
Wow. What a shitty way to rain on someone’s parade! Some ‘friend’. It must be horrible to be famous.
