You tatted with what? A paperclip?

I always say that I am a dyed in the wool shuttle tatter.  I love love love tatting shuttles.

I love how they look, I love how they feel, and  I love MAKING tatting shuttles…..

Because I am a tatting shuttle afficianado, I will often look at things and think:

Wow…that looks like a tatting shuttle!

So, the other day, I noticed that a plastic paper clip on my desk looked like it could be a pseudo-tatting shuttle….

Of course, I had to give it a try!

And, yep!

You can indeed, upcycle and re-purpose a plastic paper clip and tat with it!

And, that’s mystery thread that I bought by the armload when my local weaving store was going out of business.

So, with a little creativity, you can make lace anywhere, anyhow!

Happy Tatting!

What a novel idea! *shuffles.around.desk* I know I have at least one of those biggie clips around here somewhere…gotta try tatting with it.

Thanks for sharing your experiment. What fun to see how easy it is to tat with an uncommon shuttle item. Do you think that biggie clip would hold a about the same of thread as a regular shuttle?

    Hi Pam
I am working on a tatting video…. I have to cram a lot of info into the 10 minute limit for YouTube… which is challenging! LOL!

You know what? I use all kinds of threads and yarns to tat, but I have been tatting for a gazillion years…. BUT for getting started, I would definitely work with something like DMC Perle Cotton #8 – a smooth, pleasing thread that is not too thin, not too thick….

If you are on Ravelry, then definitely join Tatta-tat-tatters – we’ve got a lot of info there for getting started with tatting!
    :o )

Any chance you’d do a tutorial on tatting? I’ve got a shuttle, but no idea how to use it. What thread is good? Can I use sewing thread that I’ve got on hand, or do I need to find some special kind of thread?

Like you, I love the office supplies almost as much as my craft supplies (I knit and sew, mostly).

    Hi Diane
LOL! I love the stationery store as much as the craft store…. love all those things that live with paper….
Have fun on your expedition to your office supply store… and you can impress the daylights out of your fellow workers when you whip out a paper clip and tat some lace with it! Hmmm.. maybe tat a few bookmarks… *G*
    Have fun!
    :o )

Very clever! I only have traditional paper clips lying around… I guess I’ll have to check out the office supply stores and see what’s new!
