Celebrity Yoga Instructor Mandy Ingber’s Mellow Yoga Music: Playlist Peeks

If holiday shopping has you stressed and overwhelmed, yoga and music are two things that will definitely make you feel better. Mandy Ingber knows a thing or two about both (that’s why stars like Jennifer Aniston and Brooke Shields love her), so we got her to share her favorite mellow tunes, so those of us who can’t make it to her Los Angeles studio can still benefit from her expertise.

Here’s a peek at one of Mandy’s favorite playlists to get you through the holidays:

Where it lives: I’ve always been into music. My parents always had the stereo on, blasting Elton John, Van Morrisson, The Police… so I had a hard time getting rid of my cassettes. I miss the blood, sweat and tears of the old-fashioned way of making a mixed tape. I used to spend hours just planning it out and listening to the transitions. Now it’s so quick. I have CDs, but I’ve also succumbed to the computer and the iPod with my playlists. I also share playlists on my website, in the music lounge section. These are some of my favorite workout playlists that I use in my classes or with my clients. I include a playlist in my monthly newsletter as well.

How I listen to it: I play music to motivate my students, so I choose a theme or use some of my old standbys; then I mix in a few new tracks. If I’m working with a private client I try to cater to their tastes. So whatever stereo system I can find to plug my iPod into. When I teach at a studio, I’ll play deejay and mix in a track from a CD, depending on the crowd.

What’s on it: This is my Yoga Mellow playlist; it’s a real crowd-pleaser. The music starts off upbeat with a Bob Marley tune, which always encourages good, deep inhales and exhales; then it leads into popular music that’s spacious and has a beat. I end the active portion (which is to encourage the more active flow) with this great, inspiring track I found years ago that has a Martin Luther King, Jr. speech mixed in. Then I bring it down with some good, mellow classic rock — including Prince! — to give it a sensuality and a familiarity. It’s a lot easier to hang out in a pose if you are playing a song you know well. I learned to motivate through music in my spinning classes and that just carried over into the Yoga classes. But my mixes date back to the mid-80′s when I used to like throwing a good dance party in my living room:
