This year, New Jersey joins the ever-increasing ranks of legalized medical marijuana states. With the count now up to 14 states, the qualifications for toking up are basically the same: a severe ailment. However, each state has a different idea of what malady means.

The majority of the time, a person must suffer from a serious condition such as terminal cancer, AIDS, epilepsy, glaucoma, or multiple sclerosis in order to legally smoke pot. But in California, the state that first fired up in 1996, your GP could potentially prescribe a legal Marley for your migraine. Michigan will let you grow ganja (in a locked facility, of course) if you have chronic muscle spasms. And New Jersey’s qualifications are pretty sweet: If you live with Crohn’s disease, muscular dystrophy, or severe vomiting, you’re in the clear to score some Mary Jane.

Although some states may have loose interpretations, MDs aren’t just giving this stuff away. Patients who qualify are usually in intense pain or discomfort, or, according to their physicians, have less than a year to live. If that doesn’t describe you, we don’t recommend trying to con your doc, or following the career path of Nancy Botwin on Showtime’s “Weeds”.
